Great is Thy Faithfulness

Lamentations 3:22-23, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Most of us know these popular verses penned in Lamentations chapter 3 because it’s a song often sung by many across the world, and rightfully so. God is faithful. He is faithful even when we are not. He is faithful to do what He says He will do. He is faithful to complete what He has begun in us. He is faithful to keep what we entrust to Him. 


Here are three beautiful gems that highlight the faithfulness of God from this famous passage of scripture, Lamentations 3:22-23. 


God’s love is great.


God’s love is so great indeed that it saves us from an eternity spent separated from Him. Second Peter 3:9 tells us, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” It is not God’s heart to want to see anyone perish. Instead, in His great love, He chooses to be patient with us. He gives us chances upon chances to come to know Him. He is not quick to strike us down in our errors. His love for us is indeed great and we should never take that for granted. But how do we come to accept this love? How do we bask in the full extent of his great love? Acts 3:19-21 tells us:


“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets."

Repent, that is, turn from your sinful ways, and put your faith in Jesus Christ. This is the only way to have eternal life. Only faith in Jesus saves. 


God’s compassion never fails. 


Sometimes we get in trouble with those we love and they may not speak to us for a while. There are times when we even disappoint ourselves and treat ourselves poorly in an attempt at self-punishment for having failed in some way. But God does not need us to stay away from Him until He gets over what we’ve done. He doesn’t need us to try to fix the things we’ve broken separate and apart from Him. He instead pours out His compassion on us and helps us through our troubles, even those we cause ourselves. But what does compassion look like? Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God’s compassion isn’t just words on a page, it is love in action. It is demonstrative and sacrificial. It is unfailing. 


Does that mean that we can do whatever we want? No. God’s word says in 1 Peter 1:16, “for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”” God does not tolerate sin. He is a holy God. He disciplines us when we go against His word. But even in His discipline, there is compassion. His word makes this clear to us in Proverbs 3:11-12, “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” 


So don’t lose heart when hardship comes, and don’t fight against God when being disciplined. His compassion is still great. He doesn’t want us to run away from Him, He wants us to run towards Him, always. 


Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

God's faithfulness brings hope.


In times of despair, remembering God's faithfulness can bring us hope. Romans 15:13 says, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." When Jeremiah wrote Lamentations, he was surrounded by destruction and sorrow. Yet, he chose to focus on God's unwavering faithfulness, which brought him hope amidst the ruins. Similarly, by focusing on God's past faithfulness, we can find hope and strength to face our present challenges. This hope is not like the false hope that the world gives. This hope cannot be destroyed and is only for those who are in Christ. Read the following, read it slowly and take it in. 


1 Peter 1:3-6, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.”


The faithfulness of God is a foundation we can rely on through every season of life. His unchanging nature, daily mercies, and the hope He brings are all reminders of His steadfast love. 


Over the past two years, City on a Hill Legal Ministry has experienced this faithfulness firsthand. Despite numerous challenges, God has provided guidance, resources, and strength, allowing us to continue serving our clients with integrity and compassion. It is His faithfulness that has sustained us, and it is His faithfulness that will continue to keep us. 


But all of this can only be accessed through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is in Christ that we have all that we need. So if you are reading this and you are not in Christ, if you have never surrendered your life to God, be encouraged. He wants you to come to Him. Below are some verses that will tell you how. To sum it up, agree with God that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. Salvation is offered to those who believe in the Lord Jesus. 


Acts 16:30-31, “He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 


Romans 10:9-10, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
