Living Out Colossians 3:23: Three Keys to God-Honoring Work

Colossians 3:23 urges us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” This powerful verse serves as a guide for how we approach our daily tasks and responsibilities. Here are three important truths we can draw from this scripture:

1. We All Have Something to Do

Each of us has a role to play, whether in our jobs, homes, or communities. God has given everyone a purpose and specific tasks to fulfill. Consider the example of Nehemiah, who felt called to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Despite not being a builder by trade, Nehemiah embraced the task God placed before him and led the people with determination and faithfulness (Nehemiah 2:17-18). Just like Nehemiah, we all have something to contribute, and it’s our responsibility to step into the work God has prepared for us.

"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10

2. We All Must Do Our Work with Excellence

God calls us to approach our tasks with excellence, doing our best in every situation. The story of Daniel offers a powerful example of this. Despite being in a foreign land and serving under a pagan king, Daniel distinguished himself by his exceptional qualities and diligent work. His commitment to excellence led to his promotion and influence in the kingdom (Daniel 6:3). Like Daniel, we are called to excel in whatever we do, knowing that our work is a reflection of our faith.

"Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31

3. We All Must Work for the Glory of God

Our ultimate purpose in work is to glorify God. Whether we’re in the workplace, at home, or serving in the community, our focus should be on honoring God through our actions. The Apostle Paul reminds us that our work is ultimately for the Lord, not for human approval. Whether we are working on an important project for our boss, or we are doing the dishes at home, it is to be done in such a way that God would be brought glory by our efforts and input. God doesn’t expect us to only do excellent work for church and ministry, but in every role he places us in. This perspective allows us to find deeper meaning in our tasks, knowing that we are contributing to God’s kingdom.

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17

Colossians 3:23 encourages us to recognize our God-given tasks, to pursue them with excellence, and to do all things for the glory of God. By embracing these principles, we can transform our work into an act of worship and live out our faith in meaningful ways.
