God is a Better Father

“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” -Matthew 7:11

Father’s Day can be a day of celebration and joy. It’s a day when many of us share the beautiful memories we have with our fathers and look forward to making even more. It’s a day to visit them, even if we haven’t seen them all year, and to acknowledge them for always providing, protecting, and loving us against all odds and under all conditions.

However, Father’s Day is also a day when some of us feel hurt because we didn’t have the A+ dad that others did. It’s a day of tears for those who may have lost their father, or for those who can’t share any memories—good or bad—because he was never in their lives to begin with. Perhaps dad was around, but we wished he wasn’t because he was abusive or neglectful. Depending on where you’re standing, Father’s Day can be bittersweet or even painful.

The good news is that for those of us who have put our faith in Jesus, we now have the right to be called children of God. We have a loving, Heavenly Father who cares for us and promises to never leave us nor forsake us. God’s word says, “Though mother and father may forget you, I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49:15). Our earthly fathers, even the very good ones, will always fall short when compared to our Heavenly Father.

If you have a dad who cares for you and loves you deeply, what a gift from God! You have a small glimpse of the overflowing and perfect love that your Heavenly Father has for you. If your dad is far from great, rest assured that your Heavenly Father will be there for you and show you daily what His perfect love looks like. If you’re without an earthly dad today, know that you have a Heavenly Father who knows you deeply and who has your name written in the palms of His hand (Isaiah 49:16).

As children of God, we have nothing to worry about. He is with us and knows exactly what we need when we need it because He made us. Whether your earthly dad is a source of joy or pain, remember that God is a better Father. You can always run to Him.

This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate our Heavenly Father’s perfect love and care for us. In Him, we find the ultimate example of fatherhood, one that surpasses all human limitations. Let's give thanks for His constant presence and unfailing love, knowing that in Him, we are truly blessed.
